How is Braces Treatment Done?

Braces have three main components:

1. Brackets – are brackets made of metal or (tooth-coloured) ceramic. It is glued to the tooth or attached with a band.

2. Braces – a thin metal wire that goes over each bracket and provides the force and pressure used to move the teeth.

3. Elastics – Elastics, known as “ligatures” or “o-rings,” come in many colors and are used to hold braces in place. Elastics are usually replaced at each braces adjustment visit.

Stages of Braces Treatment

Braces are part of the “active” component of orthodontic treatment. Tooth movement and bone remodeling occur when braces apply pressure to the teeth. Sometimes devices such as headgear are needed to stop the movement of certain teeth so that others can align properly around them, or springs or rubber bands can be used to apply pressure to a tooth at a particular angle. Thus, the tooth on which pressure is applied moves in harmony with other teeth. After tooth movement is completed during the active part of orthodontic treatment, your teeth may look perfect, but this does not mean that the treatment is over. The retention phase of braces treatment is necessary to ensure that your teeth stay in the right place. It takes some time for your teeth to move, and whether you can see it or not, it takes time for this movement to stop and for the bone around the teeth to grow. This is especially true for young patients whose jaw bones are still growing and developing during and after active treatment phases. Therefore, it is important to wear your retainers as recommended by your orthodontist.

Tooth-colored brackets are also available. Your orthodontist may recommend clear or tooth-colored to more closely match and match your natural tooth color.
